The Kongu Cheras ruled in the Kongu area of what is now the northwestern Tamilnadu (Coimbatore) from the late 10th century to the rise of Vijayanagar at the end of the 14th century

It has taken expert workmanship and a weaving process that demands compelling precision which can only be achieved master weavers with 30+ years of experience

The pallu too is embellished with weaving in silver-coloured zari

The border is woven with peacock motifs while the body has a close weave in zari

The bhuttas are adapted from copper coins that belong to  the Kongu Chera era which resemble inscribed version of   a bow (left)

T he border carries a box bhutta of folklore drummers performing in a street theatre

There is a talk among the locals that this  coin was discovered during the auspiscious Kumbabishekam of Brihadeeswarar temple in Tanjore
